Author: Terry Leslie Puterbaugh

George Butterbaugh and his older brother, Johann Peter Sr., came to Philadephia on 15 Sep 1752 from Rotterdam via Cowes, England on the ship, Two Brothers, under its Master, Captain Thomas Arnot.  The ship made yearly voyages to Philadelphia between 1747 and 1754, carrying 2-300 passengers each time.  George was under 16 and did not sign an oath (as George Pooderbach) until Sepember 29,1768.  Their father, Johann Thiel  Putterbaugh, descended from Germans who lived around Schwarzenau (Westphalia) Germany, likely in Puterbach nearby, which means "yellow spring".  They belonged to the Church of the Brethren, founded in Schwarzenau in 1708 under the protection of Count of Wittgenstein.  After the Count died in 1720, the Brethren began to flee to Holland and later to Philadelphia.  They became the Dunkard Baptist, an Anabaptist group in Pennsylvania.

George and Johann Peter moved to Frederick County, MD near Midddletown. Johann Peter joined the British army and fought (with legendary bravery) in battles around Detroit in the French and Indian War. In March 1778, he took an oath of allegiance to the Revolution in Hartford County, MD.  His eldest son, Joseph, served in the militia. George stayed in Maryland, when in 1756 in Frederick, Maryland, George married Catherine Adams, born 17 Aug 1736, daughter of Nicholas Adams, and baptized 5 Sep 1736 at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Cacalico Twp, Lancaster Co, PA.  She became a Dunkard Baptist with her husband.  They had nine children: Jacob Adam Puterbaugh (1757-1814), George, Jr. (1759-1800), Henry Adams (1761-1839), John Adams (1763-1795), Maria Mary (1765-1848), Christina (1767-1844), David Adams (1769-1808), Catherine (1722-1850), Abraham (1784-1841).  From August 13, 1757 to 1758, George is found on the muster roll of Capt. Jonathan Hagar's Company of Militia during the French and Indian War.

As early as 1761, George bought land in Maryland, but later Mason-Dixon surveyors found that much of the land was really in Pennsylvania.  While there he provided supplies to the Revolutionary forces in the area. In 1783, he began buying land in Montgomery Twp, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, accumulating 110 acres by 1786.  Over the years, he and his sons, Henry and John, accumulated additional lands nearby.   At his death on 21 Sep 1800, they lived near Welsh Run, Montgomery Twp, Franklin County, PA in a house that he built in 1786. He was a relatively wealthy man.  His wife, Catherine continued living until 1814. George and Catherine are buried together in the Old Secrist/Butterbaugh farm cemetery.  His son, Henry, and daughter, Catherine, are also buried there.  His son, John is probably buried there as well.  Children George, Maria Mary and Christina lived all their lives in Pennsylvania.  Sons, Jacob and David, emigrated to Ohio with a Dunkard Baptist congregation.  David died soon after arriving there.  George's youngest son, Abraham, emigrated to Michigan.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
