Author: Timothy Edward Peterman

William Newton, Jr. was born about 1715/20 in Westmoreland Co., Virginia, the son of William and Elizabeth (Berryman) Newton, and grandson of John and Mary (_____) Newton and Benjamin and Sarah (_____) Berryman.

During the Revolutionary War, he paid the 1782 land tax in Stafford Co., Virginia.

He is reported to have married Margaret Monroe. Prior to 1752, he married a second time to Elizabeth Kenyon (died after 1766), daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (Waddington) Kenyon. Abraham identified his daughter as Elizabeth Kenyon in his 1750 Will, an indication that she married William Newton between then and 1752.

William stated in his 1784 Will that he was giving his estate to his eight children, but then made bequests to nine children: John, Isaac, Thomas, Benjamin, Elizabeth, William Jr., Abraham, Margaret (born about 1757 and died before 1815), and Sarah. Any children born between 1740 and 1750 must be children of Margaret Monroe. Any children born 1752 and later must be children of Elizabeth Kenyon.

William wrote his Will on June 16, 1784, added a codicil to his Will on Oct. 8, 1788. The Will was proved on Dec. 14, 1789 in Stafford Co., Virginia.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
