Author: D. Homer Wright

George Matthews was born in Antrim, Ireland in 1726. He arrived in Pennsylvania with his parents in about 1741. He served in the Indian War of 1746 in Capt. Samuel Perry's Company. He was an Ensign in the French and Indian War of 1756-1764. Finally, he was a Captain in the 5th Battalion of Cumberland County Associations from 1776-1778. The members of this battalion were known to be fierce fighters, but also very religious men.  In fact it was thought that many of them were members of the Rocky Spring Church, of course we know that George Matthews was also.  Matthews would end up being wounded at Crooked Billet, but apparently it was not serious, as he went on to be a very successful and active person for the community and State.  Crooked Billet is near present day Hatboro, Pennsylvania.  In 1790 George Matthews was a signer of the Pennsylvania Constitution.  In 1791, after the war, he would be commissioned by Governor Mifflin as an associate judge of the County of Franklin.

George Matthews attended the Rocky Spring Church, in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.  He was a trustee and and elder. Inside the church he had a pew assigned to him, which bears his name, and is still present today.

George Matthews died at his residence. Numerous records state he was buried in the Rocky Spring graveyard behind the church. In addition, his wife Isabella is purported to have been buried there also.  To date, their grave markers have not been found.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
