Author: Robert Roy Thomas

Nathan Bassett was born in 1713 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.1

He married Elizabeth Rogers on 2 January 1734 in Harwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.2 Among their known children were:

  • Ebenezer was born on 4 September 1738.
  • Johana was born on 6 November 1740 and married Simeon Bearse/Berce.
  • Samuel [Patriot P-110484] was born on 10 March 1746 and married Peninnah Bassett.
  • David [Patriot P-110428] was born on 10 June 1749 and married Elizabeth Chase.

Nathan was trusted by his fellow townsmen and held public office frequently. He served as Selectman of Chatham from 1762 to 1768 and Town Clerk and Treasurer from 1769 to 1783. 4

At the opening of the Revolutionary War in 1774, a Committee of Correspondence for Barnstable County, Massachusetts, was formed in response to a letter from the Boston Committee; Deacon Nathan Bassett was chosen as one of the two representatives from Chatham.3

The Patriot died on 2 December 1800 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts; his place of burial is unknown.5
