Samuel Bassett was born on 10 March 1746 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (Chase) Bassett.1
He married his cousin, Peninah Bassett, on 14 January 1768 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.2
In 1773 and after, Samuel was listed in the Chatham tax rolls as a Baptist and not subject to ministerial taxes.3 Among their known children were:4
Mercy was born on 24 July 1768 and married Seth Walker.
John was born on 4 July 1770 and married Mercy Ellis.
Peninnah was born on 17 August 1772 and married Owen Chase.
Mary was born on 18 August 1775.
Elizabeth was born on 8 February 1777 and married Lot Chase.
Samuel Jr was born on 20 May 1778 and married Elizabeth Garrick.
Asela was born on 25 February 1780 and married William Smith.
Esther was born on 1 July 1784 and married her sister's widower, Lot Chase.
During the American Revolution, Samuel served as a Lieutenant in the Barnstable County company of Captain Thomas Hamilton. He enlisted on 1 July 1775 and serviced six months and 16 days while stationed in Barnstable County.5
The Patriot died on 31 March 1823 in Chatham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts.
