Author: Timothy Edward Peterman

Matthew McGlasson was born Jan. 3, 1756 in Buckingham Co., Virginia, the son of William McGlasson.

Revolutionary War Service: he served as a Private, in the company of Captain Harden Perkin commanded by Colonel Charles May of the Virginia Militia from Oct. 1778 to Jan. 1779. Between Feb. 1780 to Aug. 1781 he served as a Private in the company of Captain William Ford commanded by Colonel John Calloway. He served about 10 days in Captain Robert Cary's Company, commanded by Colonel Cabell.

Mattnew served about 20 days as Orderly Sergeant in Captain John Crouch's Company, commanded by Colonel Dugit. When he was drafted in September of 1781, he hired a substitute as his wife was sick.

He lived in Amherst, Charlotte, and Campbell counties, Virginia. In 1813, he moved to Cumberland Co., Kentucky, and then to Adair Co., Kentucky. He is reported to have married Elizabeth Cunningham, daughter of Thomas Cunningham. Matthew had several children. The marriage license for Robert Vermillion and Nancy McGlasson shows that Matthew was her father. Other children have been listed by various genealogists (James, Joseph Bradford, William, Arabella, Elizabeth, John C., Barnett, and Stephen), but the accuracy of these claims remains unverified.

Matthew died Jun. 30, 1834 in Adair Co., Kentucky.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.

Additional guidelines around the Biography writeup can be found here:
