Author: Timothy Edward Peterman

Francis Burch Vermillion was born about 1757 in Prince Georges Co., Maryland, the son of Robert Vermillion and Elizabeth (Burch) Vermillion, and grandson of Giles and Jane (& Hutcheson) Vermillion and Francis and Allie (Owin) Burch.

He patriotically supported the Revolutionary War by signing the Oath of Fidelity in Prince Georges Co., Maryland on March 2, 1778.

After the Revolutionary War, he lived in Amherst and Pittsylvania Counties in Virginia. He moved to Mercer Co., Kentucky before 1820, and then to Pike Co., Missouri. He died in 1842 in Pike Co., Missouri, and his estate went into probate on March 1, 1842.

On Oct. 30, 1780, Francis married Ann Wood in Prince Georges Co., Maryland. After her death, he married on Aug. 11, 1784, to Ann Williams in Norfolk Co., Virginia. Tradition has it that Francis was married to Nancy Griffith and some have suggested that she was actually Nancy Lambert.

The petition of Reason Vermillion identifies the following ten sons of the Patriot:

  1. Cornelius (born about 1780/84-1845).
  2. Josiah (born about 1780/90 and died before 1842).
  3. Robert (1785-1846).
  4. Henderson (1789-1870).
  5. Mason (born about 1790-1828).
  6. Isaiah (1792-1871).
  7. Nicodemus (born about 1794 and died after 1842).
  8. William (1799-1884).
  9. Joel (1802-1871).
  10. Reason (born about 1803 and died before 1883).

Chances are, Ann Wood was the mother of all of the children. If she married first to a Wood, her maiden name could have been Griffith or Lambert.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
