Author: Thomas Allen Whitefield Sr.

John McConnell was born about 1741 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a son of James McConnell (1715-1764). He married Elizabeth Dunbar, daughter of William Dunbar and Catharine Barclay, about the year 1768 at Tuscarora Valley, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Their known children are: John born about 1769, Catherine born about 1771 married first William Smith and second John Mortimer, Elizabeth born about 1773 married John Andrew, Ann born about 1775 married William Adams, Mary born about 1777 married John Love, Sarah born about 1784 married Robert Wilson and Jesse born about 1789 married Eliza Mills.

He served in the Revolutionary War as First Lieutenant in Captain John McMillen’s Ninth Company, Second Battalion, under Colonel James Potter at Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, 24 January 1776.

John McConnell died about 1789 at Potter Township (then Mifflin County, present day Centre County, Pennsylvania). His intestate estate names his wife, Elizabeth, and there are additional notations in the estate regarding Jesse and Sarah McConnell, minor children of John McConnell in need of a guardian to be appointed to them.

Elizabeth (Dunbar) McConnell, widow of John, died in June 1812, a resident of Redbank Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Her Last Will and Testament at Will Book 1-2, Page 10, Armstrong County, is dated 10 October 1808. In her Will she names her children: Catharine, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, Sarah, John, Jesse and her granddaughter Elizabeth Wilson.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
