Author: Timothy Edward Peterman

Matthew Hillis was born ca 1742 in Delaware or Ireland, probably a son of Robert and Catherine (Cunningham) Hillas.

He moved from New Castle Co., Delaware to Smith Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania prior to the Revolutionary War. Service: Frontier Ranger alerting settlements of Indian attacks; Private, Pennsylvania Militia. He died before Dec. 8, 1803, in Washington Co., Pennsylvania.

He married Elizabeth Carr before 1767. She died Nov. 6, 1820, in Harrison Co., Ohio. They had seven children, all daughters:

  • Jane (1767-1849)
  • Agnes (1770-after 1803)
  • Elizabeth (1772-after 1803)
  • Martha (1776-1836)
  • Eleanor (1778-1816)
  • Mary (1782-after 1803)
  • Rebecca (1786-1843)
