Author: James English Vaughn Jr.
Mary (Polly) Hawkins was born September 19, 1716 in King Williams County, Virginia, and she died January 6, 1804 in Craig’s Settlement, Clear Creek, Kentucky. She is buried in the Great Crossing Cemetery in Georgetown, Scott Co., Kentucky. Mary (Polly) Hawkins was a descendant of Sir John Hawkins (1532 - 1595), a cousin of Sir Francis Drake and a Rear Admiral in the English Navy, who fought under Queen Elizabeth I defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588. Mary (Polly) Hawkins married Toliver Craig (1704 – 1799) circa 1730 in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Toliver and Mary had a large family of eleven children, John, Toliver Jr., Lewis, Elijah, Joyce, Jane, Elizabeth, Joseph, Benjamin, Jeremiah and Sallie. All of their children were married adults before the family moved from Virginia to Kentucky to escape religious persecution.
Mary (Polly) Hawkins Craig was about 66 years old at the time of the American Revolutionary War action that is known as the Siege of Bryan’s Station. She is thought to have been the leader of the women and children who left the protection of the fort to carry in the daily water supply from a nearby spring under the muskets of the hostile Canadian Rangers and Wyandot Indians laying siege to the Station. Mary (Polly) Hawkins Craig also is listed as a NSDAR Ancestor (A027259) for her role in the defense of Bryan’s Station. Her eldest son, John Craig, was a Captain in the Virginia (Kentucky) Militia, and he was in command of Bryan’s Station during its siege in August of 1782.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
