Author: Bernard Delaney Ellis

Ebenezer Griswold was born on 29 July 1725 in Norwichtown, New London, Connecticut, the son of Samuel1 and Elizabeth (Abell) Griswold.

He married on 7 November 1748 to Hannah Merrill, who was born on 31 July 1725 in Norwich. Among their known children were:

  • Ebenezer was born on 16 July 1749 and married Anna Wheeler.
  • Eunice was born on 20 April 1752 and married Thomas Abell [Patriot P-100248].
  • Hannah was born on 23 August 1754 and married Jesse Tenney [Patriot P-302970].
  • Samuel [Patriot P-171120] was born on 29 March 1759 and married Lucretia Abell.
  • Joshua was born on 19 April 1766 and married Clarissa Wright.
  • Alvin was born on 24 October 1768 and married Anna Wass.
  • Rufus Griswold was born on 8 March 1773 and married Deborah Wass.

According to his son Samuel’s pension deposition, Ebenezer moved his family to Vermont in 1776.

During the Revolutionary War, his name appeared on the roll in June 1781 in the Bennington company of Captain William Hutchins, commanded by Colonel Samuel Herrick.5 During that same month, his son Samuel served in Captain Samuel Robinson’s company of the same regiment. It is unclear how this service was attributed to the father, Ebenezer, rather than the son Ebenezer.

The Patriot died on 30 September 1810 in Bennington, Vermont, aged 85,6 and was buried in Old Bennington Cemetery.7

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
