A historical marker is located on US Higway 19 (Freedom Highway) 1.2 miles east of Worthington, Harrison Co., WV, GPS 39.456717, -80.240517
The marker cites "COON'S FORT - To the south, Indian fort built in 1777 under direction of Captain James Booth. It was an important place of refuge for many early settlers in this valley. Near by was the iron furnace built by Benjamin Brice in 1812."

Joseph Coon was born 4 Apr 1720, Philadelphia, Bucks County, PA.
Joseph Coon married Catherine Conrad about 1748.
Joseph & Catherine Conrad Coon had eight children:: Conrad, Joseph, Jr., Anthony, Philip, Maudline, Mary, Elizabeth, and Catherine Coon.
Joseph Coon served in the Virginia troops as a soldier of the frontier. He was a constructor and defender of Coon's Fort in Marion County, (W)VA. His son, Anthony Coon, also served.
Joseph Coon died 6 April 1798, Harrison County, (W)VA.
