Jacob Schmidt was born on approximately 14 March 1743, calculating from his burial record.1 He first appears in Loudoun County, Virginia, records in 1784. It is unknown where he lived before that time, although it is likely to have been Pennsylvania or western Maryland.

His first wife appears to have been Salome. A daughter, Catherine, of Jacob and Salome, was born in 1784 and baptized at the German Reformed Church (now in Lovettsville) in 1785.

In his 1805 Last Will and Testament, he identified his wife as Susannah. In the Burial Register of the Lutheran Church, there is an entry for 8 March 1836 for “Susanna Smith, widow of Jacob Smith (dec’d), aged 82 years, 4 months, and 1 day.”2  The Cemetery Directory also gives her age as 82 y, 4m, and 1 day.3    This would give a calculated birth date of 7 November 1753.

His children, as listed in his Will in 1805, were:4

  • Mary
  • Sarah
  • Catherine
  • Susannah
  • George
  • Elisabeth
  • Rachel
  • Jacob
  • Lydia
  • Samuel

The Supply Tax was paid by two Jacob Smiths in 1783. Both have German names in proximity to them, so we can be confident that one of them was Jacob at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church.5 A Jacob Schmidt is listed on a 1784 Communicant list at the Lutheran Church.

Jacob drew up his Last Will and Testament on 5 April 1805. He left all his property to his wife Susanna; if she remarried, then she would get 1/3 of the value of his real and personal property, and his ten children – whom he names – will get 2/3. His youngest children, Lydia and Samuel – were to get more when they arrived at a “lawful age” since the older children had already obtained some “recompense.” His youngest son, Samuel, was to be sent to school when he reached 16 or 17 years of age or put in a trade of his choice.

After Jacob died on or about April 14, an inventory was made of his property by Adam Shover, Simon Shover, and George Schultz; this was done on 23 May 1805, and was returned to the court and recorded on 9 September 1805.6

The Lutheran Church Burial Register for the date 14 April 1805 lists: “Jacob Schmidt, 62 years less 1 month.”7 Find-a-Grave memorial 42947099, “Jacob Smith,” the inscription reads “at 61 years 11 months.”  The New Jerusalem Cemetery Directory also gives his age as 61 years and 11 months, and gives his grave site as OO5 – which is near the rear of the cemetery.8

  1. The church burial record for 14 April 1805 (as translated and transcribed) reads: “Jacob [?] Schmidt, 62 years less 1 month.”  This would give a calculated birth date of approximately 14 March 1743
  2. The church Burial Register, as translated and transcribed, gives her age at death as 32 years with a question mark. However, and examination of the original German record shows her age as 82 years, not 32.”

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
