Author: John Mark DeNicola

The first New World record of John Gable is his arrival in Philadelphia on board the Phoenix, John Spurrier, Master, with inhabitants from Franconia, the Palatinate, and Zweibruecken, on 1 October 1754. The German refugees who came to America before the Revolutionary War were not British subjects and were compelled to swear allegiance to the British Crown, as Pennsylvania was a British Colony then. The records indicate that John did this and was qualified that day.

Johannes Goebel and his family attended the Jerusalem, Western Salisbury Lutheran Church in what is now Lehigh County. On 13 December 1769, Pastor Jacob Van Buskirk buried Susanna Margareth Gaebel at Salisbury at the age of 50 years. John took a second wife after his first wife died. Sabina is mentioned as his widow in his will of 1785. A member of the Jerusalem Church has suggested that this was Sabina Sonderegger, the widowed mother of Anna Barbara and the wife of Nicholas Goebel.

John paid the supply tax in Salisbury Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, in 1781 and 1783. In 1782, he also served as a private in the Seventh Company, Fourth Battalion, Militia of Northampton County.

Land Drafts from Warrants in Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, compiled by Arthur Haas, contain a draft for John Gavel: "By virtue of a warrant at Phila[delphia] dated 10 October 1751, granted to Hans Gabel located in Salisbury Township Bucks Co[unty]. Contg 126 A and allowances. Patent named Farmaugh." Casper Wistar, Andrew Hertz, Jacob Kalp, William Plumstead, Philip Hamel, and the late Philip Kratzer now Henry Ritter were adjoining owners.

John Gable followed the trade of a weaver. He died before 9 May 1791 and was probably buried at Jerusalem, Western Salisbury Church, although no church records indicate that. The Last Will and Testament of John Goebel, Salisbury Township, Weaver, No. 523, Book 2, P. 127, was dated 11 July 1785 and proved 9 May 1791. It mentioned his wife, Sabina; sons Frederick, Nicholas, John, and Valentine; Executor: George Adam Blank of Salisbury; witnesses: Nicholas Fox, John Horn, and Peter Rhoads.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
