Identified in Tax, Exoneration List-Manheim Twp / York / PA 1780 thru 1783
Received Depreciation Pay as a Private in the Continental Army
He served as a Private in the 3rd company of Captain Philip Graybell, later Captain Myers, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Weltner (also commanded at various times by Colonel Nicholas Haussegger and Baron Arendt), of the Continental German Battalion formed from Pennsylvania and Maryland, under the direct command of General Washington. Enlisted on 17 July 1776 for a three-year term. He deserted on 1 January 1777 but rejoined his company on 1 April 1779. He served from then on through the end of 1780. John Welty was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in about 1730.
He married Eve Gochnauer in about 1750, and their known children were:
Peter was born in 1753 and married Magdalena Bixler.
Barbara was born in about 1756 and married Christian Ruble.
Catharine was born on 2 February 1757 and married Adam Geeting.
Johann Jacob was born in about 1758 and married Ana Maria Hoover.
Mary Margaret was born in about 1760 and married Peter Ellenberger.
Anna was born in about 1762 and married Abraham Myer.
John was born on 26 April 1765 and married Elizabeth Newcomer.
Eve was born in about 1768 and married Henry Golding.
Elizabeth was born in about 1774 and married David Strome.
Abraham was born in about 1777.
Magdalena was born in about 1779.
Joseph was born in about 1779 and married Catherine Hunsaker.
John received depreciation pay as a Private in the Pennsylvania Militia. He is also identified in the Tax & Exoneration List-Manheim Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. The tax he paid provided funds for the war effort.
The Patriot died on 6 August 1794 in Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania. His final resting place isn’t known; however, his Last Will and Testament was written after 21 September 1793 and shows Manheim Township, York County, Pennsylvania.
