Hans Adam Battenfeld was born in 1725 in Michelbach, Kreis Mosbach in Baden. His father was Johannes Battenfeld, who was born in 1688 in Battenfeld, in the Principality of Hesse. In 1750, Johannes received permission to emigrate to the New Land with his wife, two sons, Philip and Hans Adam, and three daughters upon payment of the tithe (30 florins). On 28 August 1750, they arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Two Brothers, and Johannes and his sons Phillip and Hans Adam took the oath of loyalty at the courthouse in Philadelphia.
Johannes and his family settled in Mannheim Township in York County, Pennsylvania.
Hans Adam bought land there around 1755-60 and married Maria Elisabeth Pauster (Bowser) on 9 November 1754 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Hanover in York County. Hans Adam and Maria Elisabeth had five known children:
Johannes was born in 1756 and died in 1789
Catherine was born in 1758 and died in 1870
Leonard was born in 1760
Henry was born in 1764 and died in 1825
Jacob was born in 1767 and died in 1815
George Michael was born in 1767 and died in 1837
Adam’s wife, Maria Elisabeth, died on 4 December 1767, at the time of their son George Michael’s birth.
Shortly after his first wife died, Hans Adam was remarried to Margaretha [surname unknown]. They had three known children together:
Elisabeth was born in 1769
Adam was born in 1770 and died in 1815
and Samuel was born in 1771 and died in 1830
Around 1770-71, Johannes and his son Hans Adam came to Loudoun County, Virginia. Hans Adam bought 137 acres “at the foot of the mountain” (the Short Hill Mountain just west of the town of Lovettsville) and another 28 acres, probably a wood lot, nearby.
Johannes and Hans Adam and their families were affiliated with the Lutheran Church, now known as New Jerusalem. Both Johannes and Hans Adam were listed on the communicant rolls (but not frequently), and some of Hans Adam’s children were married there.
During the Revolutionary War, Hans Adam supplied goods and services to the army and the militia, according to Loudoun County records (which list him as Adam “Potterfeilt”). He also paid the Supply Tax in 1782 and 1783.
Hans Adam Battenfeld died on 17 March 1804 in Loudoun County at 79 years of age and is believed to be buried in the New Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
