Author: Jim Lucky William Faulkinbury

Isaac Soward/Seward was born in about 1729, possibly in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland.

He was credited with patriotic service in North Carolina for taking the Oath of Allegiance in order to make a land entry in Rowan County, North Carolina, for 300 acres on the waters of Hunter Creek on 17 February 1778 and another entry for an adjoining 100 acres on the waters of Hunter Creek on 3 August 1778.

Isaac married Miliston Vanderford on 4 November 1750 in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. He wrote his will in Monroe County, Virginia, on 21 January 1803, naming his wife Miliston and the following children:

  • Isaac Jr. was born in about 1764.
  • Thomas
  • Ruth Jane
  • Miliston
  • Griffin was born on 10 October 1755 and changed his surname to Tipswood
  • Rebeka
  • Nelly

Isaac named his wife Miliston and son Isaac Jr. as the executors of his will. His wife, Miliston, was to receive his plantation with all the buildings, clear lands, orchards, stock of cattle, sheep, hogs, fowl, and household furniture. At her death, all of the property would then go to his son, Isaac Jr. The other children were to receive five (5) shillings each. The will was proved in the September 1803 Court for Monroe Co. Virginia by three of the witnesses to the will, Elijah Ballard, William Brown, and Phillip Ballard.

A recent monument stone for Isaac is found in the Dropping Lick Cemetery, Union, Monroe Co., now West Virginia.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
