1775, he served as a Minuteman in the company of Captain Spencer, commanded by Colonel Geroge Taliaferro.
1777, he served as a Private in the companies of Captains Francis Taylor and Joseph Spencer.

Thomas Ballard was born about 1741 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, the son of Philip and Nancy Ann (Johnson) Ballard.
He first married Frances Anna Chapman in about 1768 in Orange County, Virginia; she died in 1777. Their known children were:
John C. was born in 1771 and married Chloe Flynn.
Anna was born in 1773 and married Joshua Trackwell.
Frankie C. was born about 1776.
He married on 8 March 1778 in Orange County, Virginia, to his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith. Their known children were:
Nancy was born about 1780 and married Samuel Thompson.
Elizabeth "Betsy" was born in 1786 and married Jacob Smith.
Feldon/Fielding was born on 5 July 1789 and married Peggy Brown.
He enlisted with his brother Philip Ballard Jr. in the Culpeper Minutemen Service under Captain Spencer, the Regiment to which he was attached was commanded by Colonel George Taliaferro, Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Stevens, and Major Thomas Marshall. He was engaged against the British at the skirmish at the Great Bridge on 9 December 1775, Great Bridge, Virginia, and Portsmouth, Virginia.
He served as a Private in the 2nd Virginia Regiment between May and November 1777, in the company of Captain Francis Taylor and Captain Joseph Spencer Company, Company B. He was listed as absent on 28 March 1777. Thomas was discharged on 17 November 1777 at Yorktown, York County, Virginia.
1777 was an eventful year for Thomas; his wartime service and the death of his first wife, Frances, occurred that same year.
1830 was the last year Thomas appeared in the property tax records, suggesting he died sometime after that year.
