It is considered a research aid and is intended to assist in locating sources that can be used as proof.
An excerpt transcribed from the Revolutionary War Pension of Daniel Allen, *W325:
State of Tennessee
Lawrence County
On this the 19th day of August 1851 personally appeared before A. O. P. Nicholson Chancellor of the Middle Division of the State of Tennessee Sitting at Lawrenceburg for the said County of Lawrence, Alathea Allen a resident of said County of Lawrence aged 78 years who being first duly sworn according to law on her oath doth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 7th 1838 entitled "An act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows." That she is the widow of Daniel Allen who was an Ensign of the Continental line in the war of the Revolution in the State of North Carolina and served some considerable time in said War and that his name was inscribed on the rolls in the office of Comptroller of public accounts in and for the State of North Carolina and pavements made to him as such in some, that he resided either in Guilford or Rockingham County State of North Carolina when he volunteered and entered the service under Captain William Bethel. The time he entered the service and the time he left the same not recollected. She further declares that she was married to the said Daniel Allen on the 30th day of March 1788 by the Reverend Jonathan Mulkey at Washington County in the State of Tennessee, that her husband the aforesaid Daniel Allen died on the 30th July 1834 in the County of Giles in said State of Tennessee; that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first day of January 1794, viz.: at the time above stated. She further swears that she is now a widow and that she has never before made any application for a pension on account of her ignorance of her rights.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
