Author: Wade Fitzgerald Ward

A portion of this biography was provided by compatriot Wade Fitzgerald Ward and augmented by PRS Staff.

Evan Shelby was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, before 1751, the son of Moses and Isabella (Alexander) Shelby.

He married Susan Polk Alexander in 1776. She was born in 1759 in Mecklenburg County and died in 1837. Her pension application file references her surviving children as:

  • Thomas was born in about 1797.
  • Isabella was born in about 1778 and married [?] Alexander
  • Sarah was born in 1768 or 1778 and married John Alexander.
  • Mary was born on 15 May 1791 and married William Alexander
  • Harriet was born in about 1805 and married Allison Alexander.
  • Milton was born on 30 January 1806 and married Amanda Rudsill.

Evan served as a Private in South Carolina under Captain William Alexander, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Wade Hampton of General Thomas Sumter's Brigade. He was a light horseman for a ten-month tour in South Carolina. During that time, he participated in the Battle of Cowan's Ford in February 1781 against Cornwallis’s army. This was followed by a second engagement at the Battle of Guilford Court House on 15 March 1781

The Patriot died in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, in April 1825. There is a Find-a-Grave memorial that implies he was buried in Poplar Tent Presbyterian Churchyard in Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina. However, no proof is supplied to support this assertation.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
