The following information was assembled from numerous sources and cannot be used directly as proof of Qualifying Service or Lineage.
It is considered a research aid and is intended to assist in locating sources that can be used as proof.
Belfield Cave was born on 25 October 1756, in Montebello, Orange County, Virginia, the son of Benjamin Jr and Elizabeth (Belfield) Cave.
He married Mildred Christy in July 1776. Together they had the following known children:
Elizabeth [1] was born on 9 May 1778 and died young.
Benjamin was born on 24 January 1780 and married Jane Glassel.
Elizabeth [2] was born in about 1782 and married Valentine Johnson.
Sarah was born on 15 April 1786 and died young.
Philip C. was born on 13 August 1788.
Belfield was born on 26 May 1794 and married Luev Jones.
Hudson M. was born on 10 January 1792 and married Delia Barbee.
Sarah Christie was born on 12 July 1796 and married Zachariah Shackelford.
Frances B. was born on 13 August 1798 and married John Collins.
Emily Amanda was born on 26 February 1803 and married David Carr.
He was commissioned a Lieutenant in Captain Benjamin Johnson's Company on 24 June 1779 and was part of General Thomas Nelson Junior's Brigade by September 1780. By mid-June 1781, he was serving in Captain May Burton's Company. He was promoted to Captain in Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Johnson's unit on 26 Jul 1781. He is known to have participated in the Battle of Green Spring and the Siege of Yorktown.
Belfield returned to Orange County after the war. He became involved with local politics, becoming an Orange County Justice in 1799 and Colonel of the Third Virginia Regiment by 1801.
This Last Will and Testament was written on 4 May 1811 and proven in probate court on 28 August 1811. In it, he names his heirs as his wife, Mildred, and sons Joseph, Philip, Hudson, Belfield, and Benjamin; daughter Elizabeth Johnson, and his "three other daughters.”
The Patriot died in Orange County on 4 June 1811, and Mildred survived him by 18 years.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
