Francis Coddington was born in 1728.

He signed the Georgia Declaration of Independence on 3 August 1777 in Liberty County and served as Commissary of Issues on the Civil Staff. He was a signer of the McIntosh Petition in 1777. His maritime career saw him acting as a Captain of the privateer sloop Sunbury Hero. In 1776, the Georgia Council of Safety granted him a Letter of Marque, which authorized him to attack and capture British vessels and bring them before an admiralty court for condemnation and transfer of ownership. Francis was captured at Fort Morris in 1779, and later that year, he was paroled to Sunbury.

After the war, he served as a State Representative from Liberty County.

The Patriot died on 24 November 1792. Francis was a member of the Midway Church and Society in Midway, Georgia. His exact burial location is unknown, but records indicate he was buried in St John's Parish at Midway. Midway Church was located in St John's Parish, which later became Liberty County in Georgia. He does not have a gravestone in the Church cemetery, as over half of the stones were destroyed when the Union Army corralled their horses and livestock in the cemetery and in the church. However, his name and dates were inscribed on the SAR marker placed in the cemetery.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
