David McCarter, blacksmith and militiaman enlisted in a South Carolina (SC) company of Horse Dragoon militia raised for York District during 1780; served (1780-1782) tours totaling 67 days and, discharged -date, unknown.

David McCarter’s parents were Scots-Irish Presbyterian Abraham McCarter (1738-1798), a native of County Down, Northern Ireland and Elizabeth Carson McCarter (1730-1830), a daughter of Samuel Carson and his spouse, Sarah of Chester County (Co.), Pennsylvania (PA). [The Will of Samuel Carson of London Grove Twp., founded 1723 at Chester Co., PA was dated 28 Aug., 1766 and proven 16 Oct., 1766 at Court. It recorded Legatees: Margaret, wife of David Byers -2 shillings; daughter (dau.), Elizabeth McCarter wife of *Abraham -2 shillings; dau., Mary wife of Walter Carson -2 shillings; dau., Rebecca Carson -2 shillings; dau., Jane wife of *Sam’l. Corry -2 shillings; To sons, William and *Walter Carson and dau., Hannah Carson -2 shillings each; To dau., Agnes Carson -2 shillings. To son Francis £140 (Pounds, Sterling) it being a just debt due for services done, also Executor. All remaining estate to wife, Sarah.]

David’s parents, Abraham McCarter and Elizabeth, married (m.) either at Pennsylvania or Carolina Piedmont, presently York Co., SC; source, U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 Name: Elizabeth Carson and Abraham McCarter, Marriage Year: 1756, Number Pgs.: 26.

David was a 2nd surviving child, born in 1757 to his parent’s holy Presbyterian union. Among David’s surviving siblings were Walter McCarter born (b.) 1751 along the boundary-line between SC and North Carolina (NC). This area [York District, SC formed 1785 from New Acquisition District (1772)]. Other siblings included James Adams McCarter; William McCarter b. the same year as *Christopher McCarter (b. 1758); Samuel; Andrew; John; Abraham and Mary McCarter. By searching online, https://www.carolana.com/SC/Revolution/patriot_military_sc_privates_m.htm                                      “McCarter, David” (age 23) was recorded with 67 days in Militia. Unit and dates unknown. The writer determined, Revolutionary War for the SC Piedmont (Upcountry) was contemptuously hard-fought after three (3) separate British Crown assaults were led 1st by British LieutCol. (Cavalry) Banastre Tarleton at Buford’s (Virginia Continentals -Waxhaws) Massacre 29 May 1780, and two more by Lord Charles Cornwallis. Obviously, (SC) Whig militia recruited early in 1780 *Christopher McCarter and David, his brother to enlist in a company of Horse Dragoon raised for [York District, (present-day, Clover, SC)] not too distant from Kings Mountain action on 7 Oct 1780.

However, a close examination of the source: The American Revolution in South Carolina, The Privates, Horsemen, etc., revealed several of David McCarter’s brothers: William McCarter and Walter McCarter enlisted in companies raised for [New Acquisition District Regt., (York District, formed 1785)] and, *Christopher McCarter, a militiaman (private) served  tours totaling 60 days in a company of Horse Dragoon militia raised for York District during 1780; both, were discharged (David, a blacksmith) and logically, so was his brother, Christopher; James McCarter enlisted for Upper Ninety-Six District Regt., and John McCarter for Roebuck’s Bttn., of Spartan Regt., (SC) Militia.

Christopher McCarter is identical with *SAR Patriot #: P-336594. He and David are alphabetically credited online:  The American Revolution in South Carolina, Patriots and Their Forces, All Known SC Ground Troops:  Privates, Horsemen, etc. – Last Names Beginning with “M”

Short of his 40th birthday, David McCarter m. during approx. 1787, Sarah Catherine Dickson.  Children noted from the Presbyterian marriage were Elizabeth McCarter (1788-1862); Rosannah McCarter (1790-1836); Margaret Dickson McCarter (1799-1865) and Thomas Alexander McCarter (1804-1885); see, 2nd U.S. Federal Census 1800, York County, South Carolina, stamped with ink print -“626” William McCarter, appeared as male between age 26 thru 44, and total household no. 5. Separately observed same pg., was brother, David McCarter, male between 26 thru 44: wife, Sarah, (age 33) female between age 26 thru 44: Elizabeth, (age 12) female between age 10 thru 15, and Rosannah, (age 10) and Margaret, (age 1) dau.’s under age 10: Upon the same, pg. , was recorded Rev. William Dickson, (age 47) male 45 and over.  

Was Rev. William Dickson a relative of David McCarter’s spouse, Sarah Catherine Dickson; visit, History of Bethany ARP, Prior to 1793, all Presbyterians near Kings Mountain worshiped together, about that year, some of the members withdrew and applied to the Synod of the Carolinas for a pastor, Rev. William Dickson became the congregations pastor between 1797-1831, the date of his death.  https://www.bethanyarp.org/

This bond was found recorded with David’s spouse, Sarah McCarter’s mark (name) and signatures of her husband’s brothers – James, Walter and *Christopher McCarter.
