Author: Barry Frederick Schwoerer
John Kalb Sr. was born in 1730 in Philadelphia County, PA (now Montgomery County). His father, George Martin Kalb was an immigrant from the northeast corner of Germany. Available German records strongly suggest George martin Kalb’s father was the brother of the father of MGen DeKalb of Revolutionary War fame, in fact, when a family member was interviewed for a book in 1865, the person interviewed said MGen DeKalb was his cousin. John Kalb Sr. was a farmer. He married Mary Elizabeth Müllerin in 1757 in Limerick Township, Philadelphia County, PA. John and Mary had eight children including John Kalb Jr., the man connecting the Kalb family to our family. John Kalb paid the 1780 Pennsylvania Supply Tax, a tax raised to purchase supplies for the Revolutionary War. Pennsylvania County Revolutionary War Militia Rolls find John Kalb as a soldier in a variety of militia musters. However, the records do not differentiate “Senior” or “Junior” thus not allowing militia service to be attributed to a specific person. We also find John Kalb served in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment, Continental Line as a Private. The Regiment stood up 9DEC 1775 at Philadelphia and John served the duration of the War. He was awarded “Donation Land” for his service, with the land located NE of present day Pittsburg. The record of service in the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment does not record “Senior” or “Junior” so cannot be attributed to a specific person. Analysis of data leads our family to believe John Kalb Senior paid the Supply Tax AND served in the militia while John Kalb Junior served in the 3rd Pennsylvania. Research continues. After the Revolution, John Kalb Sr and two of his sons, including John Kalb Jr. migrated from PA to northern MD near Emmitsburg. After 1802 and before 1805 Mary Elizabeth Kalb died and John Kalb Sr. and his son George migrated to Franklin County, OH where they each took up 160 acres of lands SW of present day Columbus. John Kalb Sr. died in 1815 and is buried in a cemetery in Canal Winchester, Franklin Co., OH. In about 1815, John Kalb Jr. migrated to Loudoun County, VA and settled near Lovettsville, VA. He and his wife a buried in the graveyard at Rehobeth Methodist Church about 4 miles south of Lovettsville. The Kalb family donated the land for building of the church and for the cemetery adjacent to the church.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
