Author: James Daniel Cates
John Garland was born in Hampton, NH on May 18, 1719, to John Garland (1692-1752) and Elizabeth Dearborn Garland (1692-1770). The family moved to nearby Rye, NH, and John Garland, Sr. was a landowner with holdings in Hampton, Rye, Gilmanton, Nottingham and Barrington. Patriot John Garland settled land in Green Hill, Barrington, NH. John married Molly Rand in Rye, NH, on February 14, 1744. Molly was the daughter of Richard and Abiall Rand born February 8, 1726 in Rye. John was active in the affairs of the town serving as assessor in 1753, 1755, and 1758. He served in the New Hampshire Militia in the French and Indian War. He served as moderator of the town meeting and selectman in 1760, 1761, and 1764, and as moderator in 1777, 1778, 1780, and 1785. John was a signer of the Association Test and served as Justice of the Peace in 1776 and 1783. In 1778 he was chosen by the town of Barrington as the town’s representative for the convention at Concord to form a government independent of Great Britain. In 1781, 1782 he represented Barrington in the General Assembly. John and Molly raised twelve children. Molly died in 1769. John died 10 Dec 1805.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
