The father of James Peery II , James Peery, and his two brothers, Thomas and George emigrated from Great Britain aboard the ship “Charming Nancy” from Plymouth, England via Rotterdam to Philadelphia, PA on November 9, 1738. They initially settled in the Lancaster, PA area. By 1749 they were in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where they purchased land in the Beverly Patent, on Black Creek near Staunton, Virginia which was then Orange County. The brother, Thomas, was killed by a band of about 60 Shawnee Indians near Purgatory Creek, a small tributary of the James River, in 1763.
James Peery II, who was born in Augusta County, VA, was living in Botetourt County, Virginia at the time of the American Revolution. He served under Captain Mays in the 55th District, Botetourt County Virginia Militia. He later attained the rank of Captain. His DAR patriot number is A088080.
He married Elinor (Ellen) Dennis on 18 Mar 1777 in Botetourt County She was the daughter of Joseph Dennis and his wife, Hanna Lewis. They were the parents of 8 children who are: William G, George, Michael, Harriet. Samuel, James, Eleanor and Hannah
After the war the family moved further west to Tazewell County, VA where he lived the rest of his life. His will is in Will Book #1, Tazewell County, Virginia, Microfilm Reel 8, which is in the Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA. He devises land and property to his named children and also mentions Negro slaves. The will was prepared 18 Oct 1821 and was proven 27 Nov 1821

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
