Author: Lt Col Gary Owen Green (Ret.)

Malachi Ellis was born March 6, 1738, at Sandwich, Massachusetts, a son of Ephraim Ellis and Rebecca.  He married Susannah Dennis, November 7, 1759 at Sandwich.  They had one son during their marriage.  Susannah died before November 25, 1773.

Malachi Ellis was living at Sandwich when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Captain Joshua Tobey's Company, July 1, 1775; for service of six months and 16 days, roll sworn to at Middlesex County.  He served in Captain Micah Hamlen's Company of Colonel Thomas Marshal's Regiment.  He received a company order for advance pay for one month, etc., dated Boston, June 27, 1776.  A letter written by Colonel Thomas Marshall to the Council, dated August 21, 1776, recommended Ellis be commissioned as a Lieutenant in Captain Hamblin's Company.  It was ordered in Council, August 22, 1776, that a commission be issued.  He served as lieutenant in Captain Micah Hamlin's Company of Colonel Thomas Marshall's Regiment from May 14, 1776 to August 1, 1776, for two months and 19 days, by muster roll from Castle Island.  He served as second lieutenant of this same company and regiment from August 1, 1776, to October 31, 1776 for three months, and again as documented by a pay roll for November 1776.  He served as a lieutenant in Captain Job Crocker's Company of Colonel Nathan Sparhawk's Regiment from June 24, 1777 until December 12, 1777, a period of five months and 22 days, travel included, at Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  The company was raised to serve for six months from July 1, 1777.  He served as a second lieutenant in Captain Micah Hamlen's Company of Colonel Jonathan Reed's First Regiment of Guards as documented by muster rolls dated May 9, and June 1, 1778 at Cambridge.  He was a lieutenant in Captain Matthias Tobey's Company of Lieutenant Colonel Hallet's Barnstable County Regiment from July 14, 1780, through November 2, 1780, for a period of service of three months and 23 days, with travel included.  The company was detached to reinforce the Continental Army for three months.  He reported acting as Quartermaster from July 24, 1780, to October 31, 1780, for two months and 11 days.

He died June 23, 1811, at Sandwich, Massachusetts, at the age of 73 years.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
