Author: Thomas Allen Whitefield Sr.

Rudolph “Rudy” Basom was born about the year 1755 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth before the year 1783. Rudolph Basom contributed to the War of the Revolution by paying the Supply Tax in Londonderry Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1783. Rudolph appears as “Rudy” Basom in the 1786 Londonderry Township, Dauphin County Septennial Census of 1786 and 1800 U.S. Census and 1800 Pennsylvania Septennial Census in Greenwood Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The fourteen known children of Rudolph known are listed in Orphans Court proceedings of their father in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in the year 1813 (OC Docket 6, pages 282-283): Christopher/Christian (1783-1845), Jacob (1786-1859), Henry (1790-1951), Samuel (?-1846), Mary (?-1859), David (1804-1860), John (1801-1870), Martin (1797-1844), Rudolph (1802-1875), Peter (1805-1880), Abraham (1804-1864), Elizabeth , Ann [Nancy] (?-1828) and Daniel (?-1845). Of these fourteen, John, Martin, Rudolph, Peter, Abraham, Elizabeth, Ann and Daniel were minors at the time of the death of their parents. The proceedings named above were for the purpose of partition of a 150 acre land parcel in what was then Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The administration of the estate of Rudolph Basom continued for decades because the court had difficulty keeping track of the heirs. In a writ dated 29 October 1860, the court had no address for four of the heirs of the Rudolph Basom Estate. There are also 57 pages of Orphans Court Record (administration since Abraham did not have a Will) in Perry County, Pennsylvania, regarding this estate. The exact date and place of Rudolph’s death and burial are not known, though it may be in or near Greenwood Township, which was then a part of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
