Andre Tregre was a member of the Louisiana German Coast Militia under Captain Don Carlos Brazcauc (Brosseaux) and the overall command of Governor General Bernardo de Galvez during the American Revolution. It is well documented in Churchill’s book and others that the German Coast Militia participated in the Battles of Baton Rouge and Bayou Manchac and the discovery of the 1778 Germ. Coast Militia list by Judy Riffel provided the proof for individual patriots including “Andres Traguer”.
Andre was born ca. 1754 on the German Coast in Louisiana. His parents were Jean George Tregre and Veronique Rommel both of St. Charles Parish, LA. Andre married Marie Eve Kerner 23 Nov 1784 in Saint John the Baptist Parish, LA. She was born in Saint John Parish, LA to George Kerner and Marie Eve Jacob who were both born in Bas-Rhine.
Andre and Marie Eve had at least twelve children, six girls and six boys. Their third daughter, Marie Catherine, was my lineal ancestor. The patriot Andre Tregre was my fifth Great Grandfather on our grandmother’s maternal side.
In the first decade of 1800, Andre owned property on the left descending bank of the Mississippi River just upstream and across the river from the St. John Catholic Church. This property is just upstream from Marie Eve’s father George Kerner.
Andre was buried about 23 Jan 1843 at age 89 at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Thibadeaux, LA. We have not found his grave.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
