Dietrich Bishoff, a first generation American, was born May 19, 1756, the son of Heinrich and Elizabetha (Ellrodt) Bishoff. In Germany Township, York (now Adams) County Pennsylvania. He was a farmer and officially became a land owner when his father sold him eighty-nine acres of the original Bishoff farm of 239 acres with the proviso that he would take care of his father’s physical needs and care for the rest of his natural life. It appears that he was a favorite son since his father in the sale document gives the reason as “for the love and affection I bear to my son, Dietrich Bishoff to me during my natural life and the sum of five shillings… (which would be very roughly according to experts about $240.00)” He was married twice. His first wife Dorothea Study died on April 16, 1813. He remarried on May 3, 1814 to Betsy Hawn from Frederick, MD according to the Gettysburg newspaper. He paid the Revolutionary Supply Tax and is listed in the 1781 Requisitions of Recruits from Germany Township. He died August 10, 1839, predeceased by his second wife, Betsy. Dietrich and Dorothea had nine children: John (predeceased his father), Maria “Sophia”, Henry, Ann “Margaret”, Margaret Magdalena, Catherine, Elizabeth, Polly, and Mary (who is listed as incompetent to handle her affairs). Dietrich and Betsy had six children: David, Susannah, Jacob, Rachel, Daniel, and Lena “Lydia”. Dietrich died on August 10, 1839 at 83. He was buried in the family plot at St John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Littlestown, Pennsylvania (a congregation which his father helped establish in October 1771).
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
