William Watson was one of three with the same name at the Battle of Kings Mountain 07Oct1780 in York Co SC. Dr. Bobby Moss in The Patriots of Kings Mountain cites SC audited accounts 5340 and 8271 as evidence for the one who served under Col. Edward Lacey. The only biographical details available are that he was brother-in-law of John Moffett, that he lived near Bethany SC, and that he was killed by the battle. The fact that he was not buried with four from his company KIA in the battlefield grave suggests that he was mortally wounded and died later somewhere else. The 1880 and 1909 battlefield monuments list Private William Watson, KIA.

Allison Creek flows SE from Bethany SC. William Watson Stephenson was given his name by Watson’s neighbors, the Stephensons who lived on Allison Creek. One estimated 3.5 miles from the battle. FPA R157 Hugh Allison arrived 08Oct1780 and assisted in carrying the wounded of his company to a place of safety and in burying the dead—Wm Watson, a brother-in-law of Col. Moffett, was killed—Alexander Caldwell was wounded and died—Maj. Chronicle was shot dead.

FPA R2173 James Potter Collins I was that day under Major Chronicle , who was killed in the action. My Captain's name was Watson, who was wounded, so that he died a few days after.

William was a son of David and Hannah Watson of Bullock’s Creek, Sharon SC. William’s sister Ann Watson married Col. John Moffett.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
