Author: Edward Lary
Wyx Seely served as a Soldier in the 9th Militia Company of the 9th Regiment of Connecticut. He was commanded by Captain Reuben Scofield and Colonel John Mead. Records indicate the 9th Regiment was formed of Companies coming from Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich. It is very likely this 9th Militia Company was formed in Stamford. We don’t know exactly how long Wyx served, but we do have Company Pay Roll documents for him dated Stamford for Aug 1779.

Wyx Seely was born in Stamford, CT on 16 Sep 1736. His parents, both also born in Stamford, were Eliphalet Seeley and Sarah Holly. Wyx’s father Eliphalet, also an SAR Patriot Ancestor, was a Lieutenant during the war for American independence, serving for two years in the same Company and Regiment as his son. Before the war, Wyx married Mary St. John in Norwalk, CT on 4 Nov 1756. Together they raised eight children; six boys and two girls. One son, Elisha, and one daughter, Martha, predeceased Wyx.

Mary St. John Seely died on 4 Nov 1778 in Stamford. Wyx apparently married second after her death. In his will, dated 18 May 1790 in Poundridge, Westchester County, NY Wyx mentions his beloved wife Bethiah. It is also interesting that one of the Testators of Wyx’s will was his former Company Captain Reuben Scofield. All the heirs mentioned in the will have been proven to be children of Wyx and his first wife Mary St. John, so it is assumed there were no children from the second marriage.

We believe Wyx Seely died in Poundridge, Westchester County, NY on 18 May 1790, the same day as he executed his will.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
