Ebenezer Crissy served as a Soldier in the 2nd Regiment of the Westchester County (NY) Militia under Colonel Thomas Thomas. We don’t know exactly how long Ebenezer served, but we have found four Receipt Rolls acknowledging four separate payments to him as settlement for his services during the War.
Ebenezer was born in Stamford, CT on 21 Oct 1733. His parents were Nathaniel Crissey and Hannah Hoyt. Both parents were born, lived, and died in Stamford. Ebenezer’s mother Hannah died very young, at age 36, when Ebenezer was only six years old. Ebenezer married Bethia Bell in Stamford on 5 Jun 1759. She was born in Stamford on 28 Apr 1733 to Jonathan Bell and Eunice Reed. Jonathan was born in Norwalk and Eunice in Stamford. Together, Ebenezer and Hannah raised eight children, three sons and five daughters. Since he is missing from Ebenezer’s will, dated Stamford 12 Sep 1787, we assume their oldest son Ebenezer predeceased his father Ebenezer. All seven remaining children are named in the will and therefore assumed living at that date.
Bethia Bell Crissy died in Stamford on 21 Sep 1782. In his will of 1789 Ebenezer names his beloved wife Mary. Therefore, we assume he remarried after Bethia’s death. There is no record of children from the second marriage.
Ebenezer died in New Canaan, CT on 1 Aug 1789. There is one report he is buried in the North Stamford Congregational Church Cemetery. We have not yet been able to confirm this is his burial location.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
