Author: Edward Lary

Abraham Burbank is recognized for his Civil Service during the war for American independence. He was elected Selectman at the annual town meeting of the freeholders and other inhabitants of the town of Bradford, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 14 Mar 1775. During his term as a Selectman he voted to supply the Massachusetts Army with sundries; to pay town Minutemen for reenlisting; to source and equip the Minutemen with bayonets, scabbards and belts; and to serve on the Committee of Correspondence responsible for reporting town persons who deserted the Province service. Abraham died in office on 9 Sep 1775.

Abraham was born in Bradford, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony on 18 Nov 1727. His parents were Eleazer and Hannah Burbank. All of the Burbank’s, living mostly in Bradford and Rowley, descend from John and Ann Burbank who emigrated from England in 1635. Abraham married Abigail Savory in Bradford on 25 Apr 1753. Together they raised two children; a son Eliphalet and a daughter Abigail. Their son Eliphalet is also a Patriot Ancestor. He served two tours of duty at a Private, first in Boston and second at the Fort at West Point.

Abraham was listed as a yeoman, or owner of a family farm; and as a cordwainer, or shoemaker. He spent his entire life in Bradford. Both Abraham and his wife Abigail died in the fall of 1775 at very young ages—48 and 43. They are both buried in the Ancient Burial Ground, now called the Riverview Cemetery, in Groveland, Essex County, MA.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
