Abraham Ten Broeck was born 13 May 1734 at Albany, New York (NY) to a large allied family with many extended kinship lines. His parents, Dirck Wesselsen Ten Broeck (1686-1751) and Margarita Grietje Cuyler pledged their bonds of marriage with a license recorded at the Albany Dutch Reformed Church, 26 Nov 1714. Abraham’s father was Mayor of Albany between 1746 and 1748. He was also, appointed as an (Six Nations, NY) Indian Affairs Commissioner. This Albany, ‘Reformed Dutch’ family was united with area families belonging to the Albany congregation, where both parents and their allied families baptized their children. Abraham’s father’s will was recorded at Albany on 1 Jul 1748. Dirck’s will named his wife, Margarita [(Cuyler), daughter of Abraham Cuyler and Catrina Bleeker] and sons, Abraham and Dirck, executors.

Abraham’s surviving sisters were Catharina Ten Broeck (1715-1802) and Anna (1717-1731). Abraham during his teen years, after the (1751) death of his father, Dirck Ten Broeck was sent briefly to understand operations of their families New York City trading house, between NY and Europe. His mother and he resided after the death of Abraham’s father at their family Albany home. Abraham thrived conducting the export of timber and wood from the Hudson River Valley to Europe in exchange for imported goods sold at the family store at Albany City. Their family holdings that included warehouses, a lumberyard, city docks on the north side and a family storefront were popular among so many Albany City families. During 1759, Abraham Ten Broeck was elected to the city council from the 3rd ward.

During 1763, Abraham, age 29, married Elizabeth Van Rensselaer (1734-1813) of Albany, NY, a dau of Stephanus Van Rensselaer (1707-1747) and his wife, Elisabeth Groesbeck (1707-1758). Elizabeth Van Rensselaer’s paternal grandmother was Maritje ‘Maria’ Van Cortlandt (1680-1730) born at Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester, NY.

The couple parented a son, Dirck Abraham Ten Broeck (1765-1833); and, 4 dau(s), Elizabeth (1765-1773); Elizabeth (1772-1848); Maria Van Rensselaer Ten Broeck and Margarita Ten Broeck – all baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church of Albany, their parents congregation.

Above the age of 16, Abraham initially enlisted (1751) within Capt John Scott’s company 1st (NY) Rgt Provincial Militia raised for Albany County commanded by LieutCol Gosen Van Schaick; see, VAN SCHAICK, SAR Patriot & Grave Index for Ancestor # P-309866. During 1775, at age 40 Abraham Ten Broeck was commissioned as a col of the Albany county militia. Ten Broeck was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General of the New York State Militia; source, New York State Museum historian and writer, Stefan Bielinski; see, http://exhibitions.nysm.nysed.gov//albany/bios/t/abtbroeck6.html

Abraham died 19 Jan 1810 at age 76. His remains were laid to rest in either the 1780s Albany Cemetery or the 1801 new burying ground. Because of flooding, the historic Albany Rural Cemeteries were consolidated and the bodies and headstones were relocated to the 1841 burying site now a Nat’l. Historic Landmark. Today, Abraham’s family are buried within Lot 2, Sec 29, of historic Albany Rural Cemetery, est. 1841, with an entrance along Cemetery Ave mapped at Latitude: 42.706403 and Longitude: -73.724820 in Menands, Albany County, NY 12204, along with his father, Dirck Ten Broeck and mother, Margarita Cuyler. Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
