Author: James Edward Mitchell
Edward EELLS (1713-1776) was born at home in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts (MA) on 3 Jan 1713, to Reverend (Rev) Nathaniel Eells, 36 (1677-1750) and Hannah North, 34 (1679-1754). She was a daughter of Edward North. Edward Eells’ grandfather was Maj Samuel Eells (1640-1709). Edward’s father, Nathaniel graduated from Harvard College during 1699 and was ordained on 14 Jun 1704 pastor of the First Congregational Church. https://archive.org/stream/historyoffirstch00hild/historyoffirstch00hild_djvu.txt

Several sons of Rev Nathaniel Eells were educated at Harvard School and, Nathaniel is recorded giving sermons found printed for the ordinations of two sons, (Rev) Nathaniel Eells (Junr) at Stonington, and (Rev) Edward Eells (Senr), our subject, at Middletown, CT on 6 Sep 1738; source, https://familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/8791079

The marriage of Rev Edward Eells of Scituate, Plymouth to Martha Pitkin of Hartford, CT a daughter of Ozias Pitkin (1679-1747) is recorded on 24 Jul 1740 in Connecticut Town Birth Records, pre-1870 (Barbour Collection) Middletown Vital Records 1651-1854; source, http://interactive.ancestry.com/1062/VBMDUSACT1634_0026-0200/163014?backurl=http://person.ancestry.com/tree/23828560/person/1448250413/facts/citation/4693294428/edit/record

This holy matrimony produced a solid number of siblings for their son, Edward Eells (Junr) born 1741 at Middletown, Middlesex, CT, who was commissioned on 1 Jan 1777 for a company raised at Middletown, Middlesex County during the Revolutionary War. Captain Edward Eells was later elevated to the rank of Maj for the 3rd (CT) State Levies Rgt. commanded by Col Samuel Wyllys, followed by the command of Col Comfort Sage. Maj Edward Eells is the subject of Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Patriot & Grave Index biography, identical to Patriot Ancestor # P-153483.

Maj Edward Eells parents baptized their son at the (1715) First Congregational Church (Middletown) 2nd built (1736) meeting house on Main Street at
Cromwell, CT. Two years after the building of the Cromwell meeting house, Edward (Junr)’s father, Edward (Senr) was ordained and installed as pastor on 6 Sep 1738, and died in the pastorate, 12 Oct 1776 after a 38 year claim of community and ‘publick’ service. [He served as chaplain in the 2nd Rgt. of the Colonial army during 1758 in the New England campaign of Gen’l Israel Putnam against marauding Indians. In 1759, Edwards’ father was appointed chaplain in the army by the General Association of CT, and served under Gen’l Wolf at the siege and capture of Quebec.]

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
