The arrival of the immigrants at Louisiana in the early years of its founding proved to be nothing less than a miracle to the survival of the infant colony. These were just the kind of settlers Louisiana was in such desperate need of – sturdy, honest people, unafraid of hard work, and looking toward a future of peaceful settlement away from their troubled homeland.
The ancestry of François Madere’s father remains unclear. His father, Jean Madere, first appears at the Natchitoches Post in the Spanish Territory of Louisiana which was at various times under Spanish or French control. Records of the time period are in the language the controlling nation used, which makes it difficult to determine his origins. Jean Madere is believed to have been buried 21 April 1758 at Natchitoches.
François Madere was born at Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, now Edgard, St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana, about 6 January 1753, one of seven children. He became an orphan about age six. He married Ana Marie Marguerite Perilloux, 21 January 1777. A widower, he married a second time, 25 May 1787 to Magdalene Kerne.
François lived on the lower Mississippi Valley, known then as the German Coast of Louisiana, a settlement located above New Orleans. His name appears in the roster of the 2nd Company of Volunteer Militia of the German Coast of Louisiana, 2 June 1778. François served under the direct command of Captain Don Delongy, and under the overall command of Governor General Bernardo de Gálvez. François is one of the men in the initial force of 600 men assembled by Gálvez in August 1779. This diverse military force, speaking more than ten languages, ultimately grew to an estimated 1,400 men, who marched more than 100 miles to challenge the British at Fort Bute of Manchac, September 7, 1779, and the British fort at Baton Rouge, September 21, 1779. François participated in these military engagements with Gálvez.
François died at noon, 21 August 1823, at the age of 71 years. Burial took place the following day at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Cemetery, Edgard, Louisiana. According to his death record, he is said to be buried in an unmarked grave.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
