Author: David Merrill Leonard
Fletcher Sullivan, (b. ca 1750 in Dorchester County, MD) married Mary Elliott ca 1770. Caroline County was formed from a portion of Dorchester in 1773. As hostilities grew between the Colonies and Britain, Maryland passed the Militia Act in July 1777. Fletcher joined Company B, 14th Batallion of the Caroline County Militia in August 1777, the month that the only British invasion into Maryland occurred. The performance of the Maryland Militia was generally not successful. It was slow to respond if not pre-alerted. Many arrived unarmed when it did respond. It performed badly in engagements with the British. Luckily, the Caroline County Militia saw no major battles, and likely protected local communities from pillaging by the advancing British Army. The advance was General Howe’s march on Philadelphia that pushed General Washington’s Army to Valley Forge.
After the War, Fletcher’s name appeared in the Great Choptank Hundred census for Caroline County on 28 February 1778. The family moved to Guilford County, NC in 1785 and acquired land grants from the State of North Carolina during the 1790s. The family sold their holdings and left Guilford County.
The family arrived in the community of Gladeville in Wilson County, TN in 1802. Fletcher purchased land on Pond Lick on 9 March 1803. This enclave was established by Methodists. Two of Fletcher’s sons became Methodist ministers.
Fletcher began selling his holdings in 1811 and prepared a will in 1817 to distribute his property. He died on 20 November 1817 in Wilson County. Mary died on 22 August 1822. Both are buried in the Rice Family Cemetery along Stewarts Pike Rd. Their sandstone markers must be etched in order to reveal the engravings. I am descended through his son Clement Sullivan.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
