Johann Jost Eigenbrod, sixth and last child of Johann Daniel and Maria Catharina Knebel Eigenbrod, was born on 10 November 1728 in Schwarzenau, Wittgenstein, Germany. He was christened in the Evangelisch Kirche at Elsoff, Germany on 19 December 1728.

Although nothing is known of his early years, the Graceham Moravian Church recorded that he arrived in America in 1748. The ship passenger lists for that year do not list him by name. However, the ship JUDITH arrived at Philadelphia 15 September 1748 and recorded an Austus Eygenbrod and Philip Knebel, who probably was a relative of Johann Jost.

On January 1st, 1752, a Philadelphia newspaper printed a request from Johann Jost 'living in Frederick County, Maryland on Monocacy Creek' seeking information regarding the arrival of his sister in America.
In 1754 Johann received a land warrant for 25 acres which he called THE PUNCH SPOON. The property was located on Owens Creek upstream from present day Roddy Bridge. In 1756 he and Eva Maria Schörer were married. This union produced 11 children - 8 girls and 3 boys. Graceham Church reported him as 'a probationer to the Moravian Faith in the Synod of Lebanon 1758, and later a communicant at Graceham in 1763.’

COLONIAL MARYLAND NATURALIZATIONS lists 'Jost Eighenbrod' as having taken the steps to naturalization 11 September 1760 at the German Reformed Church, Fredericktown.

During the Revolutionary War the men of the colonies signed an Oath of
Allegiance to the cause and among those from Frederick County was 'John Yost Akinbrode'.

In 1781 Johann was injured in a fall from a tree and never fully recovered. Subsequently, he and his youngest son, Christian, were the caretakers and gravediggers of the Moravian Cemetery. He died 14 May 1784 and was buried in the Graceham Moravian Cemetery on 16 May 1784.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
