Scotch-Irish descent Various spellings of Surname: Shank, Schenk, & Schenck.
On July 20, 1778, Private James Shanks, age 37, enlist in Colo's Co., North Carolina Regiment, North Carolina Continental Line during the American Revolutionary War.
JAMES SHANKS was born 1741 probably in Virginia, and died December 11, 1803 in Burke County, North Carolina. He married 1st (unknow). He married 2nd (unknown) FINWELL. In 1804, before April, after JAMES SHANKS death, the widow, MRS. FINWELL SHANKS married JOHN HALL. She died Aft. 1804 in Burke County, North Carolina.
Note: The 1790 Census in Salisbury, Mecklenburg, North Carolina reveals 6 females in JAMES SHANKS household.
The six daughters of JAMES SHANKS and FINWELL are:
(1) MARY SHANKS, b. 1769, North Carolina; d. November 16, 1842, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; m. JOHN MCCULLOCH, December 07, 1797, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; b. May 26, 1769, North Carolina; d. August 11, 1845, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.. Burial: Providence PresbyterianChurch Cemetery, Charlotte , Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
(2) SARAH SHANKS was born about 1770 in North Carolina and died about 1840 in Franklin County, Kentucky. She married JAMES WYLY on July 20, 1790, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He was born December 19, 1762 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
(3) JANE SHANKS was born about 1774 in North Carolina and died August 29, 1860 in Warren County, Tennessee. She married (1) ABRAHAM II MILLER before 1798 in North Carolina. He was born 1775 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died December 07, 1840 in Warren County, Tennessee. She married (2) MATTHEW DOUGLAS on December 10, 1844, Warren County, Tennessee. He was born August 10, 1769 and died September 30, 1847, Warren County, Tennessee. JANE SHANKS is buried at Shiloh Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee.
MATTHEW DOUGLAS is buried at Douglas Cemetery Warren County Tennessee.
(4) MARGARET SHANKS was born October 25, 1775 in North Carolina and died October 17, 1857 in Warren County, Tennessee. She married WILLIAM MILLER, about 1793 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; He was born 1773, McCalpin Creek, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died December 14, 1840, Warren County, Tennessee. They are buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee.
(5) HANNAH SHANKS was born Abt. 1778 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and died August 03, 1868 in Warren County, Tennessee. She married THOMAS CARMACK GRIBBLE February 04, 1801 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, son of THOMAS GRIBBLE and SARAH IRWIN. He was born February 1776 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and died August 03, 1849 in Warren County, Tennessee. Religion: Member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They are buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Rock Island, Warren County, Tennessee.
(6) ELIZABETH SHANKS was born about 1780 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. She married JAMES BLACK on March 24, 1801 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
