Johannes Dunckel, aka: Johannes Dunkel, was born on 10 October 1703 in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany. He arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aboard the ship Thistle on 29 August 1730, with his mother Elizabeth Dunckel, and his first wife Anna Margaret (Diehl) Dunckel (1703-1781).

Johannes was the father of seven children: Kilian, Michael, Peter, Rosina, Eva Maria, Conrad, and a daughter who was the wife of John Graff. Johannes owned 100 acres of land prior to 1734 near Pennsburg in Hanover Township, Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County), Pennsylvania. he was an Elder of the Faulkner Swamp Reformed Church in 1742. He signed the letter of warning issued in 1742 by Reverand John Philip Boehm, father of the German Reformed Church in America, against the unity movement. In 1746 he was the Overseer of the Poor in Hanover Township. In the same year, he moved to Greenwich Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

During the Revolutionary War, Johannes Dunckel took the Oath of Allegiance to the state of Pennsylvania on July 3, 1778, in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

After the death of his first wife, he married Anna Catherine [surname unknown] on 2 September 1781. Johannes was a farmer in Greenwich Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died at his homestead in Greenwich Township on 23 November 1787. He and his first wife are buried at the Dunkel’s Church Cemetery, near Virginville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
