Author: John Henry Bredenfoerder

John Hopper was baptized on 29 July 1712 in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey, the son of Andries H. Hopper.

He married Elizabeth Kip on 8 April 1736 in Hackensack Reformed Dutch Church, Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. They had eleven known children:

  • Geertje "Gartara" was born in 1737 and died young
  • Andrew J. was born in 1738
  • Marytje "Mary" was born in 1741 and died young
  • Annaetjen "Hannah" was born in 1743
  • Garrit J. and was born in 1748
  • Abraham J. and was born in 1750
  • John J. A. was born in 1754
  • Hendrick "Henry" J. was born in 1755
  • Nicasie was born in 1755 and died young
  • Jacob J. was born in 1760, twin of Nicausie
  • Nicausie "Nicholas" J. was born in 1760, twin of Jacob

During the American Revolution, he displayed his patriotism by paying a New Jersey tax to support the war effort. 

The Patriot died after 29 January 1782 in Harrington Township, Bergen, New Jersey, and was buried in Paramus Dutch Reformed Churchyard in Ridgewood.
