Christopher Gerhart was born around 1727 in Germany; he arrived in Philadelphia on 11 October 1752 on the Ship “Forest”, Patrick Ouchterlony, Captain from Rotterdam, last from Portsmouth.
He settled first in Maidencreek Township and then Oley. He married his wife Maria, and had 7 children, their names being, Catherine Barbara married Johannes Babb, William, Daniel, Susannah married Samuel Mellen, Valentin, and Magdalena (my line) married Georg Hinnershitz.
The Berks County Tax List of 1767 and 1768, he is listed as a weaver and as 1 cattle. He pays a tax of 1 pound.
His family attends Zion Spies Church in Alsace Township, Berks County. All his Children are baptized here, and in later years up until his death he is listed as a Deacon in the church along with his friend Fillib (Phillip) Wentzel.
30 May 1777, He took the Oath of Allegiance and from 1777 to 1783 he served in the Berks County Militia as a Soldier (Pvt.) in Captain Huy’s 7th Company, 2 Battalion.
21 March 1786 he writes and signs his last will. His wife, Maria is still alive and he names all his children. His will is proved on 1 July 1786.
Both Christopher and his wife Maria are buried at Zion Spies Reformed Church Cemetery in Alsace Township, Berks County.
