Qualifying Service Description:
  1. Private in in Capt John McClelland's company of Westmoreland Co., PA milita, enlisting in Aug 1776 and serving for 4 months.
  2. Private in Capt James Maxwell's company in the Second Battalion of Cumberland Co., PA militia, enlisting in Nov 1777, and was engaged in the Battle of White Marsh.
  3. Assistant Commissary in the Western Department of the Continental Army, reporting to Col George Morgan, from 1779 to 1781. Tasked with procuring and milling wheat and shipping it in 100 pound kegs from Mercersburg to Pittsburg (about 160 miles over the Appalachian Mountains).

Author: Michael J. Blum
He was born on April 14, 1758, in York County, Pennsylvania. He served as a volunteer at the battles of Princeton and Trenton and was later commissioned to the western division of the army.
He Died in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio November 9, 1843, age 86 years. His remains were moved from the Presbyterian grounds March 30, 1854. His widow applied for a pension January 2, 1844, at Mercersburg, PA. Buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lot 45, Section 54, under the family of "Torrence" Obelisk.

He married Margaret Piper December 5, 1787. He applied for a pension on August 29, 1832, in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and was a resident of Mercersburg in Franklin County. When traveling west to view the country, he became ill and Died in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio November 9, 1843, age 86 years.
