Author: Leland Michael Hutchins

Joseph Whitaker was born at sea, 25 August 1755, a son of James Whitaker and Ann.  His parents are said to have died on the voyage to the Colonies, and sources indicate he was indentured to pay for the voyage.

Whitaker married Obedience “Biddy” Perdue.  They were the parents of nine children.

Joseph Whitaker was a private in Captain William Russell’s Company of the Virginia Militia from 1776-1777.  He served in Colonel Preston’s Regiment in 1781.

From the disposition of his Revolutionary War Pension application dated 13 November 1832, it is known he served as a volunteer in Captain Henry Polling’s Company of Colonel Andrew Lewis Regiment, against the Indians in 1774.  He continued his service with Captain John Taylor’s Company later commanded by Captain Thomas Burk.  He was stationed about the mouth of Indian and Rich Creeks, which are tributaries of New River.  About 1781, he marched to North Carolina with Captain Henry Patton’s Company of Colonel William Preston’s Regiment.  Whitaker was at the Battle of Whetsel’s Mill and the engagement called Reedy Fork of the New River.1

Witnesses verifying his pension application also confirmed the belief that Joseph Whitaker was born at sea, and that his parents died on the voyage.

He died 22 May 1838, at Wytheville, Wythe County, Virginia, aged 82 years.2

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
