Author: Eric Henry Troutman

Matthias Kemp was born in about 1728 in Germany. It is not known when he arrived in Pennsylvania from Germany. He was first recorded in Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster County (now Berks County), Pennsylvania, on 15 June 1745, when he applied for a land warrant for 100 acres of land. Mathias Kemp was married on 7 February 1748 (records of Northkill Church, Bernville, Berks County, Pennsylvania) to Anna Maria Magdalena Reimer, daughter of Philip and Anna Catherine Reimer.

Mathias Kemp was the father of nine children:

  1. Maria Apollonia.
  2. Anna Barbara.
  3. Johan Philip.
  4. Jacob.
  5. Johan Mathias Jr.,
  6. Daniel.
  7. Maria Catharina.
  8. Margareth.
  9. Eva Barbara.

After Maria Magdalena died (date unknown) he married Salome, who is named in his Will. Mathias Kemp was a farmer his entire life in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Mathias Kemp took the Oath of Allegiance to the state of Pennsylvania on 31 March 1778 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. He also paid the Supply Tax in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 1779 and 1780. Like many other Pennsylvania Germans, he put his life and fortune on the line by doing these patriotic acts during the Revolutionary War. If we had lost the Revolutionary War it is any ones guess what would have happened to those that did patriotic service for the revolutionary cause.

He died at his homestead in Tulpehocken Township before 28 April 1795. His will was written on 5 February 1795 and probated on 28 April 1795. His place of burial is unknown. He was probably buried at either the Northkill Church Cemetery, Bernville, Pennsylvania, or at Zion’s Blue Mountian Church Cemetery near Strausstown, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
