Godfrey was born in Europe around 1732. He came from Wurtenburg, Germany c. 1750. He resided originally in Antrim Township, Cumberland County (now Franklin County). His wife was Maria Catherine ****. He and his wife had three sons: John (1763), William and Godfrey, Jr.
He resided in Brothersvalley Township, Bedford County (now Somerset County) as early as 1777 since he was an original member of the Reformed Church that was formed in Berlin in 1777.
He obtained a warrant for a tract of land on December 27, 1784. The parcel was located about two miles west south-west of Berlin on the north fork of Buffalo Lick Creek. He conveyed this 259 ΒΌ acre tract of land to his son John on March 25, 1786. That deed lists Godfrey as a shoemaker.
He died unexpectedly while visiting family in Franklin County and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Quincy Township, Franklin County. His stone is now missing.
Godfrey paid the supply tax in Brothersvalley Township, Bedford County in 1781 and 1783.
