Barbara Hochstetler Stutzman (HS-2) was born in Europe about 1732. She immigrated to the colonies with her father Jacob Hochstetler, mother and siblings. She married Christian Stutzman (ST) sometime around 1752.
Christian and Barbara warranted several tract of land in what is now Upper Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The first was for 193 acres 37 perches and was warranted on January 17, 1753. The second was warranted on April 30, 1765 and contained 25 acres and 36 perches. The third was warranted on August 21, 1765 and contained 203 acres and 126 perches. He didn’t obtain any Patents from the Commonwealth for any of the parcels.
Barbara and Christian Stutzman had the following eight children:
Magdalena (1753 to 1823) married John Yoder (YR-125) and lived in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1800 but moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio around 1813. Anna (4/12/1755 to 3/27/1814) married Jacob Miller (ML-23) and they lived in Elk Lick Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1800. Mary (1756 to 3/13/1838) married Peter Miller (ML-24) and lived in Brothersvalley Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1800. Christian (1/8/1758 to 9/12/1825) married 1st Elizabeth Steiner, 2nd Susanna Miller (ML-55) and lastly, Mary Beiler (BY-37). He lived in Bern Township, Berks County Pennsylvania in 1790, 1800 and 1810. Jacob (1/25/1760 to c. 1820) married Anna Yoder (YR-129) and lived in Bedford (now Somerset) County, Pennsylvania in 1790. Elizabert ( died c. 1795) married John Gnaegi (KY-11) and lived in Bedford (now Somerset) County, Pennsylvania in 1790. Veronica married Nicholas Keim (KM-1) and lived in Quemahoning Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania in 1800. John (died 9/10/1833) married Anna Speicher (SP-16) and lived in Bedford (now Somerset) County in 1790.
Barbara’s husband Christian Stutzman died in 1770. Christian’s will outlined that his “wife Barbara shall remain on and manage the place after his death and if she finds it good to keep all together and to bring up the children, upon condition that she not remarry.” She chose to remain on the home place and raise the children there. She never remarried and is shown on the tax lists from 1771 through 1782. Barbara died in about 1781 or 1782. Her burial place is uncertain.
