Author: Paul D. Banister
Gerard Green, born 27 Mar 1762, in Fairfax County, VA and was the son of James Green.
He entered service as a volunteer in the Virginia militia in February 1781, with a four month enlistment under Captain Rucker’s company, commanded by Col. Ebenezer Zane. He started from his residence in Loudoun County, Virginia and joined the troops at Wheeling. Captain William Crawford and Benjamin Harrison were also in this expedition. The service consisted of mainly guarding against attacks from the British and Indians and protecting the inhabitants from their depredations, at Wheeling, and the surrounding area. At the expiration of his tour he was dismissed and came home, about the last of June 1781.
In late August of 1781, Gerard Green was drafted for a tour of four months under Captain Francis Russell. The regiment was commanded by Col. West in General Weedon’s brigade. He marched from his residence in Loudon County, Virginia to Yorktown where he remained for the siege which ended October 19. During the siege, he was stationed in the quarter occupied by the French under Lafayette After the surrender of Cornwallis, he marched with the prisoners to Fredericksburg and later to Winchester. According to his pension application, he received a discharge from Captain Russell which had been long since lost or destroyed. He well recalled General Washington, Lafayette and Anthony Wayne. In total, he was in the service of the United States for a full eight months. His service in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Virginia Militia is documented in his pension application file W-5012.
After the war, he joined the historic migration into the wilderness of Kentucky; his pension application and tax records date his arrival in Kentucky to the year 1789, three years before Kentucky was admitted to statehood. Although he returned to Loudoun County, Virginia, where on 7 Nov 1793 married Verlinda Littleton, he apparently was a resident of Kentucky from 1789 until his death in Harrison County on 10 Jul 1845. He was 84 years old at the time of his death.
He and his wife were the parents of ten children, eight who lived to adulthood:
1. Fielding Benjamin Green; 1794 – 1865
2. George Green; 1798 – 1862
3. James W Green; 1801 – 1881
4. Parthenia Green; 1816
5. Mildred Green; 1805 – 1851
6. William Green; 1806 –
7. Lebron Green; 1808 –
8. Elizabeth Green; 1812 –

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
