Author: Richard Eugene Smith Ph.D.

Nathaniel Pomeroy, Jr., was born on 29 November 1758 in Suffield, Connecticut, the son of Nathaniel Sr. and Abigail (King) Pomeroy.

During the Revolution, Nathaniel served in several roles in the Connecticut Militia. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant under Captain John Harmon of the 2nd Company, commanded by Colonel Samuel Mott. The company was raised between June and July 1776 to reinforce troops at Fort Ticonderoga. Nathaniel, however, was placed "on other service." 1-page 389

Between 1776 and 1778, he served as a Captain under General Spencer at Rhode Island.1-page 614

He was a company Captain in Colonel Samuel Chapman's Regiment, entered service in August 1778 to dislodge the British in Newport and participated in the Battle of Rhode Island on 29 August 1778. He was discharged on September.1-page 531

Nathaniel was married in 1782 to Martha Spencer. The Patriot died on 17 May 1831 in Suffield. His widow applied for and received a military pension.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
